In 2018, Carrer and others published “What is the potential of cropland albedo management in the fight against global warming? A case study based on the use of cover crops” and argued that “a financial compensation for this climate change mitigation service should be encouraged (e.g. via a carbon market).” In 2022, Sieber and others published “Albedo on cropland: Field-scale effects of current agricultural practices in Northern Europe“ and “Albedo impacts of current agricultural land use: Crop-specific albedo from MODIS data and inclusion in LCA of crop production”. The authors concluded that climate benefits can be achieved by realistic albedo increases on cropland.
